Kathy's Introduction

I live in Southern California with my husband of seven years, Dan, and two sons, almost 4 and 6. We’re right in between Los Angeles and Disneyland in a small (for CA) city that no one has ever heard of. Currently I stay at home with the boys and take care of our home. I love to cook but hate to clean, so we have a wonderful smelling but sometimes messy house ;-).

I have always loved creating things. One of my earliest memories is sewing a slipper for my baby doll at around 3 years old (I think there was a total of 4 stitches on the whole thing). I soon moved on to using the sewing machine and crochet, then finally learned to knit at age 8. I preferred crochet for many years since it was so much more forgiving and mainly stuck to making plain afghans or simple patterns. Then when I was 20 I came down with mono and was on bed rest for many months. Day time TV quickly lost any allure, and I decided to knit my first sweater. I still remember it – pale yellow cotton with lots of detailing, cables, and long sleeves. It was beautiful but a bit too small and completely impractical to wear.

Years went by. Dissalusioned with that first sweater, I turned to thread crochet and my sewing and created all kinds of intricate things. Slowly, I started noticing how soft and flexible knit items were, and realized I could do better than that old sweater. I began knitting again, and this time was hooked. I flew into making socks and Christmas stockings and began to experiment with my own patterns and designs. Last year my Grandmother passed on all of her knitting tools and yarn as she couldn’t knit any longer due to a stroke. I feel as if I am carrying on a family legacy when I use her needles or the patterns in those old boxes. It’s like coming home.

I love knitting for others, and welcome another chance to do some good while doing something I love.

Sue's Introduction :-)

My name is Sue and I am a SAHM of to wonderful girls (almost 6 and 3.5 years old). I have been together with my DH for almost 13 years, and married almost 10. We live in MA. I grew up in Texas (my parents moved us to MA when I was 15) And I even lived in central Jersey for a few years. I have quiet a few hobbies; Knitting, sewing, crocheting, scrapbook, but the one that means to most to me is photography. I am not a great photographer but I love taking pictures of my kids. :0) I have thousands of pictures of them and my oldest isn’t even 6 yet. :-D I have a blog Closet Geek, it is pretty boring, LOL! And I just set up a knit blog Novice Knits

I honestly can’t remember when I start trying to learn how to knit. I have been crocheting for about 20 years. And the whole that whole time I had been messing around with knitting. But I was having a hard time getting started, so I’d fall back to crocheting. Then this past fall I decided enough was enough I was going to learn to do and do it right. It helped a great deal that the parenting board I post on has a ton of knitters (you know who you are) and were/are so willing to answer my questions.

I knitted a whole bunch of scarves for Chirtmas gifts for practice. And I am now working on my first sweater. It is a raglan, and it is for my future neice or nephew. And I have been bombarding those same poor people with a lot of questions lately.

I wanted to learn how to knit so I can find another way to make things. I love making gifts for people. I also find the process of knitting very relaxing. So while I do get nervous about finishing a project if there is a deadline (especially with this sweater SIL is not going to be pregnant forever) I don’t get frustrated if I have to take soemthing out or even start all over. I like to knit, the end product is bonus. :-)

Oh and the other important thing you should know about me. I type HORRIBLY and I am a terrible proof-reader, sorry (blush)

Trey's Introduction

Greetings!

I’ll start off the introductions to the knitters of this group.

Originally from Virginia, I now live with my partner of 9 years and our almost 3 year-old daughter (oh, and one African Grey parrot named Katie) in San Francisco, California. My interests (aside from knitting and charities of course :), include gardening, biology, cooking, history and theology. I am part-owner of a small biotech consulting and education firm and am lucky enough that my office is in the basement of my home :).

I only started knitting about 4 months ago on advice of my doctor in an off-handed remark. He suggested I pick up a relaxing hobby or habit to help lower my bloodpressure…. and said knitting or yoga as two possible examples. I figured knitting was more productive :). I’m addicted. I think of my next projects all the time and usually 3 ahead.. dream of the perfect yarn and am itching to build a needle collection. It’s a sickness :)... but a relaxing and productive one :).

I thought of forming this group after reading about how someone’s children wanted to donate something they ‘did’ as opposed to money. Though money is needed in so many places (and easier than donated goods in many cases), there is something meaningful to both the creator and recipient when something is gifted directly from the gifters handiwork. So, I looked for some charities that would take knit goods, asked my online friends from my blog and a couple parenting bbs if they’d like to join in and create some projects.. and then Annie offered the web domain and site and put it together and

viola.. PeaceKnits!

So, there is my intro. You can see more at Daddy, Papa & Me
